RSS
- Q: What is RSS?
A: RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a standard Web method of distributing simple content. It’s presented in standard XML language and commonly used to deliver things like news headlines, comments and opinions, stories, job listings, marketing communications or other text lists.
- Q: Which versions of RSS does the Toolbar support?
A: The Toolbar can display feeds constructed in RSS .91, .92, 1.0, and 2.0 formats. The Toolbar also supports the Atom feed format.
- Q: How do I find RSS feeds?
A: RSS feeds are available in various places on the Web. Our RSS Information page lists some sites with feeds. That page also has some predefined searches that let you search for RSS feeds. When you get to a page that you think may have RSS feeds, look for icons like or or words like “RSS”, “headlines”, or “feed”. You can then use the Toolbar’s Add Content menu item to add these to your content feed list. For more information try the RSS Information page.
- Q: How come I can’t have more than one feed in my scrolling ticker?
A: The ticker is designed to be simple to use and doesn’t provide as many options as other ways of viewing your content feeds. The My Content link in the Ticker menu shows you all of your content feeds at once. If you change the Ticker to a non-scrolling My Content button, that button’s menu also gives you access to all of the items in your content feed.
- Q: What are the various ways I can view RSS content?
A: RSS content is viewable in the following ways:
- Ticker - Displays feed(s) in a scrolling format. Choose one feed, or automatically cycle through all of your feeds.
To customize the Ticker display:
- Select Ticker Settings from the Ticker drop-down menu.
- Find the "When displaying content in the Ticker" section.
- Choose "Display single content feed." or "Automatically rotate to my next feed."
- If you choose "Automatically rotate my next feed.", enter the number of minutes you'd like to see each feed in the available box.
- My Content Button - All feeds displayed in drop-down menu available from the My Content button.
To change Ticker to a My Content button:
- Select Ticker Settings from Ticker drop-down menu.
- Select the Display my content as a Button option.
- My Content Page - All feeds viewable from this page including headline titles and descriptions.
To view your My Content page:
- Select Manage My Content from the Ticker drop-down or My Content button drop-down menus.
- Q: How do I change my Ticker to rotate through all of my feeds instead of just one?
A: If you use the scrolling Ticker, you can choose to see either a single content feed, or have the ticker automatically rotate through all of your active feeds. To change the Ticker feed setting:
- Select Ticker Settings from the Ticker drop-down menu.
- Find the "When displaying content in the Ticker" section.
- Choose "Display single content feed." or "Automatically rotate to my next feed."
- If you choose "Automatically rotate my next feed.", enter the number of minutes you'd like to see each feed in the available box.
- Q: How does the Toolbar update my selected feeds?
A: Each feed has a setting that tells the Toolbar how often it should be refreshed. The Toolbar makes a web connection and downloads the latest versions of your feeds. This happens in the background and should not interfere with your normal web browsing. Most RSS feeds are very small and don’t take long to download. If you have personal firewall software installed, it may notify you that the Toolbar is trying to access the internet. That is how the Toolbar updates your selected feeds and you should set your firewall software to allow this.
- Q: What is a blog?
A: A blog (short for web log) is a site where someone regularly posts short articles on whatever topic interests them. The topics are as varied as the people who publish them. They are a little like the daily columns that writers publish in newspapers. Many of them have RSS feeds that link to their latest articles.
- Q: I’ve followed the directions, but my RSS feed isn’t showing up. What should I do?
A: First, open the “Manage My Content” dialog box, find the feed and click “Edit” to see its details. Make sure that the URL is correct. If you don’t know if the URL is correct, you can try removing the feed and adding it in again. The feed’s URL may be correct but the feed format may not be a standard format that the Toolbar can display. Some feeds use unusual or even broken formats. Sometimes the site providing the feed may be down or the feed may be unavailable. If this problem persists, you may have to remove the feed.
- Q: I installed the WebCrawler Toolbar, but the Ticker, Horoscope, or Weather buttons are just white boxes?
A: This can happen if something happened to interrupt the installation process. You can usually fix this by installing the Toolbar again.
- Q: What are the terms of use for RSS?
A: Most RSS feeds are free for your personal use. The exact terms are managed by the sites that provide them. The RSS feeds provided with the Toolbar are for your personal use to display in the Toolbar and related screens. You may not redistribute them.
Ticker
- Q: What does the News Ticker do?
A: The News Ticker delivers up-to-date news headlines from around the world right to your browser.
- Q: How do I turn off the News Ticker?
A: To turn the ticker off, select Toolbar Settings from the main [Company] logo drop-down menu. Then uncheck “My Content button” and click Save Settings. To turn it back on, just follow the same steps and check “My Content button”. For any further questions, please send an email.
- Q: Why does the ticker show a “Content Temporarily Unavailable” message?
A: This message can show up if the selected feed is broken or does not respond. It may also happen right after you add a new feed, before the Toolbar has had a chance to retrieve the feed’s contents. This message will also show up if you delete or disable all feeds. In that case, you can either enable a feed or turn the ticker off.
- Q: Why does my feed not appear in the ticker or show up as just a series of dots?
A: While the Toolbar is very flexible and tries to display content from as many feeds as it can, there are feeds that are implemented in a way that they don’t show up properly in the ticker. In some cases they will be readable from the My Content page. In other cases they are incompatible or broken. As we improve the Toolbar we will add support for additional variations in feed formats.
- Q: When I click on a headline in the ticker it shows files in my “Documents and Settings” folder instead of the content I was expecting.
A: This can happen when the link in a feed is invalid or broken. This is usually fixed when the feed’s author does an update.
- Q: How many content feeds can I add?
A: It depends on the size of your screen and the speed of you computer and network connection. There is no hard limit, but if you add too many feeds, the menu that lets you select a feed may not fit on your screen. If you notice that it takes a long time to display the My Content page, or that your network connection seems slow, you may want to reduce the number of feeds. You can do this by bringing up the Manage My Content settings dialog box and either deleting or disabling some feeds. Disabled feeds do not appear on the menus or on your My Content page, but you can easily enable them again if you decide you want them.
